Derek Webb - The State

Here are the lyrics to "The State" by Derek Webb, off his new album Stockholm Syndrome.   If you have any corrections let me know.   Derek is obviously talking about how we can't make our moral decisions based on what the government declares legal or illegal.  Any thoughts about what specific issues he's talking about in the verses?  I have a couple ideas, but I'd like to hear yours...

I was free to live and love and kill as I saw fit

I was at peace, there really was no one I was at war with

The only common good was that we understood

That laws unjust were only good for breaking

The difference legalized instead of (saneness?)

Left nobody free

That was the day before I married my conscience to the state

My taxes paid, these roads were laid to places of my choosing

There were no eyes up in the skies looking down into my bed

There was no government without our consent

And keys were made for anyone who just claimed it

And glass was all of every wall that framed it

From sea to shining sea

But that was the day before I married my conscience to the state

Right and wrong written on my heart, not just in the laws that condemn me

But now with Caesar satisfied, I can even do the things that should offend me

Wow thats really cool! I personally believe one of the things he's talking about is abortion. I have a really hard time with that whole issue because I HATE abortion but also don't believe "the state" as he says should be our "moral authority". You can't MAKE someone believe abortion is wrong by making it illegal, and even if you could, it wouldn't be a "Oh wow I shouldn't do this because God made EVERY human being and they have a purpose so I shouldn't have an abortion", it would be a "Oh I could get in trouble if I do this so I better not do it... or do it so no one else finds out...". Know what I mean?

Its such a hard issue. I went back and forth soooo much over that and homosexuality laws and everything in this last election. I just keep praying about it. :) I know that Derek and I tend to agree on a lot of things like this.

What do you think it means? I'd like to hear your take. :)

Oh and btw, where do you live? (Not trying to stalk you, just curious haha) I live in the Dallas area and he was just in town tonight (Friday night) but I couldn't go even though I really wanted to! He's amazing!

@kooky4Christ -

Yeah, the first verse of the song seems to me to be about abortion because the speaker is allowed to kill as they see fit yet is not at war with anyone. Many people had illegal abortions because they didn't think the ban was fair, and when it became legal, many people began to believe it must not be immoral if it's legal.

For the most part, I agree that the government shouldn't legislate morality. However, the government should legislate morality if it means protecting rights. I believe abortion should be illegal for the same reason murder is illegal, and for the same reason slavery and human trafficking are illegal. Obviously we wouldn't say "well I think slavery is wrong, but we can't legislate morality, so slavery should be legal." I don't believe individual moral choices should be the government's business - unless that moral choice violates the rights of another. If it involves killing a human being, by all means it should be illegal, whether the human is unborn or 80 years old.

I think homosexuality is a different issue, because nobody's rights are being violated if homosexuals are given the right to marry.

I live in the Seattle area, and as of yet he's not planning on coming up here. He usually finds a way to the northwest, so I'm sure it will happen at some point.
